Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of the community health projects (Healthy People Presentation, Clinical Application Papers 1 & 2, and Community Health poster presentation) are to guide the student through the process of a complete community health initiative. First, the student identifies national level key health indicators, and applies them to a community aggregate. Next, the student builds partnerships with stakeholders and community members, and applies the nursing process to promote health and well-being. The final part of the project allows students to experience scholarly dissemination of their original projects.

Student Approach to Assignment

My community health group was assigned to the maternal-infant aggregate. We spent several hours with expecting and current mothers of all different ages and backgrounds within the Hampton Roads community. We were also able to partner with community organizations like #757Breastfeeds, and assist with their initiative, Consortium for Infant and Child Health (CINCH). Our main goal while being involved with this group was to enhance knowledge regarding breastfeeding. The aggregate we spent time helping was primarily located in Norfolk, but there were also families from Hampton, Virginia Beach, and Portsmouth. The first semester spent with the aggregate consisted of attending zoom meetings, and sharing our ideas and research about breastfeeding with the mothers. We were also able to establish therapeutic relationships, and identify needs that we as nursing students could assist with. The second semester with this group was spent planning and attending events where families could come out and get in person education about breastfeeding from doulas and students. My group was able to design and provide educational materials about breastfeeding during the public events we attended.

Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio

The community health papers and poster project are included in my portfolio because they show the progress my maternal-infant aggregate made throughout the year. These assignments illustrate the effectiveness of our teaching and interactions with mothers and babies during our summer and fall semesters. These assignments also show the dedication and involvement of nursing students within the community, and how we can assist with the basic needs of our community. The following end-of-program outcomes are identified below.
